Eunjoo (EJ) was born in South Korea and graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Music. She worked as a piano teacher until the COVID-19 pandemic compelled her to pivot to a new career. After hearing praise from friends and family members for her baking, EJ travelled to South Korea to take private lessons with two French-trained pastry chefs with the goal of opening a professional baking business.
Shortly after her return, EJ launched The Cakery, an indie bakery specializing in Basque cheesecakes and French pastries made with the finest ingredients, including grade AA Tahitian vanilla beans, organic sugar and cream, and butter from France. The menu spans four main categories: premium Basque cheesecake (whole or by the slice), elegant Financier cakes, Madeline cookies, and cannelés. Popular items include Earl Grey cheesecake, passion fruit cheesecake, and the Financier Cake box, which comes with a rotating assortment of five seasonal flavors, like matcha red bean ganache, Valrhona Dulcey chocolate, yuzu white chocolate, fig Earl Grey, and peanut caramel.
Currently, website orders must be placed 48 hours in advance and can be picked up from two locations (Point Loma and Carmel Valley). In 2025, the Carmel Valley outpost will open as the bakery’s brick and mortar location, with an expanded menu of items that change every few months, including smaller cheesecakes, tarts, and more.
